Hermione Grainger

Hermione Grainger

Hermione is a Muggle-born Gryffindor student, and the best friend of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. The daughter of two dentists, she is an overachiever who excels academically, and she is described by Rowling as a “very logical, upright and good” character. Her parents are a bit bemused by their odd daughter, but quite proud of her all the same.” Hermione first appears in Philosopher’s Stone when she meets future companions Harry and Ron on the Hogwarts Express. She constantly... »View More

Owl’s Everywhere!

Owl’s Everywhere!

You might think this one a bit of a stretch, but I couldn’t resist the little guy! So cute! I’ve seen Harry’s owl art taped up on the walls at the Dursley’s house, and I think owls are a natural item for witches and wizards to collect. So I think this little owl trivit is perfect for the fan who has some Harry Potter theme items in the kitchen, or maybe for someone who is doing a Weasley home theme. I can so see Mrs. Weasley having a trivit like this one! He was only $2.00.  »View More

Cauldron

Cauldron

Is this not the cutest little candle holder you have ever seen! This votive candle cup is a little glass cauldron! I can’t tell you how thrilled I was when I found it. I had been down the aisle a time or maybe even two when I spotted it on a shelf. A bit dusty, it took a second to actually see what the shape of it was. I snatched it up and put it in my cart straight away. What a little gem! The thing cost less than a dollar! I’ll be picking up a little black candle to put inside... »View More

Borgin and Burkes

Borgin and Burkes

“Diagon Alley” is a rather tricky phrase to pronounce when you’re afraid of being incinerated by a sudden blast of emerald green flames! Or at least it was for Harry his first trip through the floo network. When Harry inadvertently says “Diagonalilly” he shoots out of the fireplace of Borgin and Burkes shop in Knockturn Alley. A dodgy place by Hagrid’s standards. Before hurrying out to join his friends at Flourish and Blots, he takes a peek at some of the merchandise... »View More

Tea Anyone?

Tea Anyone?

Ah, the Professor more hated than even Professor Snape is Professor Umbridge. Goodness was this an evil woman! In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix JK Rowling really out did herself with this character. I think she’s even more disturbing than Voldemort in many aspects. During her terrifying tenure at Hogwarts, the shrew often had tea with the students. But this was not just ordinary tea, it was laced with Veritaserum, a truth potion so potent that “You know who” would... »View More

Restricted Section

Restricted Section

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry visits the restricted section of the libary looking for information on Nicholas Flamel. Hiding under the invisibility cloak, Harry makes his way through the rows of books, until he finds the books that he wants. Taking off the cloak, he holds the lamp up to better read the titles. We have found a few lamps in various thrift stores that look much like the lamp from the film. The one we chose was smaller, we don’t want items too large... »View More

Hedwig

Hedwig

Hedwig was Harry Potter’s pet Snowy Owl and magical familiar. She was a gift to Harry on his eleventh birthday from Rubeus Hagrid, during Harry’s first visit to Diagon Alley. Harry decided upon the name “Hedwig” after finding the name in A History of Magic. Throughout her life, Hedwig provided Harry with messages and packages delivered and loyal companionship. Hedwig loved Harry dearly, showing signs by nibbling his ear or fingers, and loyally obeyed his every command (even... »View More

Snogging

Snogging

As parents, we have to deal with the overwhelming question of children and sexuality. Sadly, in today’s society, our children are bombarded with constant sexual messages. I have come to the conclusion that this is the trickle down effect of the marketing standby, “sex sells”, which forces all of us to endure the endless barrage of mindless commercials aimed at the testosterone saturated, ala Paris Hilton hamburger commercials. While no one would argue that we should go back to the... »View More

A Rose by any Other Name

A Rose by any Other Name

The naming of characters, spells and so forth, in Harry Potter is one of my favorite aspects of the stories. I recently read on JK Rowling’s website that she just makes the names up. Yet, I suspect there is a little bit more to it than that. She did share that she collects names from a wide array of sources, cemeteries being the most interesting place! But one would have to surmise that she puts a bit of effort into the “etymology” as it were, of her character’s names. One of my favorite... »View More

Hedwig’s Cage

Hedwig’s Cage

This was one of our favorite thrift store finds. We purchased this bird cage for 50 cents. It was missing a bottom, but it’s not a real bird, and it’s sitting on top of a shelf, so the lack of a bottom doesn’t matter. It also had a piece at the top that was broken half off. Probably the reasons it had been donated. These were not issues we couldn’t fix. If we decide to hang to hang the cage later, we can put a bottom in made of cardboard and paint it white. We took off the broken piece and... »View More
